The Classic Head Half Cent, designed by Mint engraver John Reich, replaced the Draped Bust Half Cent in 1809.
On the obverse is a bust of Lady Liberty, facing left. She is wearing a headband which bears the inscription LIBERTY. Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars, symbolizing the original 13 colonies. The reverse features the words HALF CENT, surrounded by a wreath, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Due to lack of demand for this denomination, numerous gaps appeared in this series. From 1812 to 1824, no half cents were struck nor were any issued in 1827 or 1830. Varieties are numerous in this series. Classic Head Half Cents were replaced in 1840 by the Braided Hair Half Cent.
