The Classic Head Large Cent, designed by Mint engraver John Reich, replaced the Draped Bust Large Cent in 1808.
On the obverse is a bust of Lady Liberty, facing left. She is wearing a headband which bears the inscription LIBERTY. Liberty is surrounded by 13 stars, symbolizing the original 13 colonies. The reverse features the words ONE CENT, surrounded by a wreath and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Classic Head Large Cents were replaced by the Matron Head Large Cent in 1814.
