This World War II 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Set was struck to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the United States involvement in World War II. These World War II 50th Anniversary Commemorative Proof Coins were minted and issued in 1993 and are in Proof condition. This World War II Commemorative Coin Set contains a Silver Dollar and a Clad Half Dollar. This 50th Anniversary World War II Commemorative Coin Set was minted at the West Point mint in New York. These World War II 50th Anniversary Commemorative Proof Coins are encapsulated and come with original U.S. Mint packaging and a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

The World War II Commemorative Silver Dollar Proof is comprised of .900 silver and .100 copper (90% Silver) with a diameter of 38.1mm and a weight of 26.73 grams. The obverse of the World War II Commemorative Proof Silver Dollar shows an image of Allied Forces storming the beaches of Normandy. On the reverse side of the World War II Commemorative Proof Silver Dollar there is a quote by General Dwight D. Eisenhower and the "flaming sword" patch.

The obverse and reverse sides of this World War II Commemorative Silver Dollar Proof were designed by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr. The World War II Commemorative Clad Proof Half Dollar features an image of Americans from the armed service on the obverse and an American GI engaged in battle on the reverse. The obverse of this World War II Commemorative Clad Proof Half Dollar was designed by George Klauba and the reverse by Bill J. Leftwich. This World War II Commemorative Proof Clad Half Dollar is comprised of .920 Copper and .080 Nickel with a diameter of 30.61 and a weight of 11.34 grams.

The U.S. Mint did not make commemorative coins from 1955-1981, despite repeated calls from the public to do so. In 1982 the Treasury department finally issued it's first commemorative coin since 1954, a silver half dollar honoring the 250th anniversary of George Washington's birth. In the past, the responsiblity for distributing commemorative coins had been placed in the hands of a commission or private individuals. This time, the responsibility fell to the U.S. Mint, and all profits were distributed to the U.S. Government. With the coming of the 1983 and 1984 Los Nageles Omypics, came the opportunity to place a surcharge on each coin, each to the benefit of an organization that was determined by Congress (in this case, the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee). While this change was widely criticized at the time, it is now the standard and the practice continues with very little controversy.

While modern commemorative coins have not seen much appreciation from the public in general, these coins continue be be incredibly significant in their historical, cultural and sentimental value.
