We are pleased to offer for sale this 1952 Franklin Silver Half Dollar GEM Proof Franklin Half Dollar.   The Franklin Silver Half Dollar is in Gem Proof condition, with nice eye appeal and no major marks or visible problems, a great value at this price.  This Franklin Silver Half Dollar is taken from an original U.S. Mint Proof Set.

The 1952 Franklin Silver Half Dollar is comprised of .900 (90%) silver and .100 (10%) copper with a mass of 12.5 grams and a diameter of 30.6mm with a reeded edge.  The Franklin Silver Half Dollar contains .40 troy ounces of pure silver.  Designed by John R. Sinnock, the Franklin Silver Half Dollar caused some controversy when it was released, because some people came to believe that the inclusion of the letters JRS on the coin was a tribute by a communist infiltrator to Joseph Stalin.  The less dramatic truth is that the JRS inscribed on the cut off at Franklin's shoulder was merely the initials of the engraver John Sinnock.

The 1952 Franklin Silver Half Dollar was created at the behest of Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross, a long time admirer of Benjamin Franklin who wished to see him honored on a coin.  Sinnock designed the obverse of the Franklin Silver Half Dollar based on a bust of Franklin by Jean-Antoine Houdon, with the obverse featuring the Liberty Bell, a symbol of American freedom as well as Franklin's home of Philadelphia.
