  • History: A Purple Heart military decoration is often awarded in the name of the President to those wounded or killed, while serving, on or after April 5, 1917. This Badge of Military Merit, which took the form of a heart made of purple cloth, was renamed the Purple Heart and is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members. The Purple Heart is often revered as one of the greatest honors our service members can receive for their sacrifices in the line of duty.
