History: Often called the "King of Country Music," Roy Acuff (September 15, 1903 - November 23, 1992) is credited with changing country music from the "hoedown" format to more of a singer-based format that we hear today. After gaining recognition as the singer of the Smoky Mountain Boys, and after joining the Grand Ole Opry in 1938, he co-founded Acuff-Rose Music which signed artists such as Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and The Everly Brothers.
