  • History: "Welcome Home" was the motto of the 2004 Summer Games due to the fact it was the first time the Olympics had been held in the city where the modern games began in 1896.  The Olympics started out as a 42-event competition with competitors from 14 nations. In 2004 it had grown to 300-events with participants from 201 countries.  The 2004 summer games were held from August 13-29. It was the first time all countries with a National Olympic Committee were in attendance since 1996.  Due to the major historical significance of these games, it was the first time the Olympic torch relay traveled around the world and finished in Ancient Olympia.
