History: Richard Buckminster Fuller (July 12, 1895 - July 1, 1983) was an American architect, theorist, author, designer, and inventor. After being expelled twice from Harvard for excessive partying and general lack of interest, Fuller served for the U.S. Navy in World War I and worked as a laborer until 1927. Deep depression led him to an epiphany where he looked to see if "a single individual could contribute to changing the world and benefiting all humanity." Best known for his designs of the geodesic dome. From 1927 until his death in 1983, Fuller was awarded over 20 U.S. patents for his inventions. From 1974 to 1983 he was president of Mensa, the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world. A few short months before his death, President Reagan presented Fuller with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. To earn this award an individual must have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".
