Sheet Size: 20 stamps, 5 across 4 down History: Born in Havana, Cuba, Félix Varela (November 20, 1788 - February 27, 1853) spent his childhood in St. Augustine, Florida living with his military grandfather. As a teenager he refused his grandfather's wishes to enter the military. He then moved back to Cuba where he studied to become a priest at San Carlos and San Ambrosio Seminary. After he was ordained at the age of 23, Varela began to teach philosophy, physics and chemistry at the same seminary where he studied. In 1821, after being chosen to represent Cuba in the Cortes Generales of Spain in Madrid, Varela joined a petition for the Independence of Latin America. For that reason, along with the essay he wrote arguing to abolish slavery in Cuba, he was sentenced to death by King Ferdinand VII who was put back in power following the French invasion of Spain in 1823. Varela fled the country before he could be arrested. He eventually found his way to New York City where he lived out the rest of his life as a writer and human rights activist.
