  • History: On October 14th, 1947, US Air Force Captain Charles Yeager became the first pilot to break the sound barrier with the Bell X-1 aircraft which Yeager named Glamorous Glennis, in honor of his wife. During the test flight he reached a top speed of 700 miles per hour, traveling faster than the speed of sound.  The rocket powered aircraft did not take off from the ground.  Instead, it was launched from under a Boeing B-29 at an altitude of 43,000 feet.   This was the 50th flight the Bell X-1 had attempted.  Although others claimed to be the first to travel faster than the speed of sound, Yeager's was the first to be able to prove the achievement, as the others did not have accurate instruments to record their speeds.
