  • Sheet Size: 20 stamps. 4 across, 5 down.
  • History: The USS Maine was commissioned in 1895, and was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named after the New England state.  The armored cruiser was built to defend against the Brazilian Navy, which was quickly becoming the most powerful of the Americas.  In January of 1898, the Maine was sent to Havana, Cuba to protect the interests of the United States during the Cuban War of Independence against Spain.  On February 15, only three weeks later, there was a major explosion on board.  Most of the crew were sleeping on the forward part of the ship where the explosion happened.  Out of the 355 crew on board, only 94 survived, including Captain Sigsbee, who's quarters were at the rear of the vessel. It is unknown what caused the explosion. However, The Spanish-American War started later that year.
