Christmas is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, and is generally celebrated on December 25th by billions of people around the world.  Madonna and Child is often the name of a work of art which shows the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus.  The word Madonna means "My Lady" in Italian.  Artworks of the Christ Child and his mother are part of the Roman Catholic and Orthodox traditions in many parts of the world.  The earliest images are from the Early Christian Church and are found in the Catacombs of Rome.  For over a thousand years, the Madonna was the most often produced piece of artwork.  Many of the most renowned painters and sculptors in history have produced creations of Madonna images.
