Sheet Size: 50 stamps: 5 across, 10 down History: Micronesia and the Marshall Islands were administered together as the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands by the United States from 1947 to 1979 under United Nations auspicies. In 1979, some of these islands formed a new country called the Federated States of Micronesia, which, together with the Marshall Islands, entered into a Compact of Free Association with the United States in 1986. The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands was dissolved by the U.N. in 1990, marking the formal end of American rule and the beginning of independence for the islands. The Compact of Free Association ensures close ties between the United States and the former territories, granting citizens of the islands the right to live and work in the U.S. and making the U.S. responsible for the defense of the islands.
