  • History: Co-founding the National Farm Workers Association, Cesar Chavez (March 31, 1927 - April 23, 1993) is the best known Latino American civil rights activist.  After his family lost their grocery store and a ranch during the Great Depression, they moved to California to work in the fields.  Chavez quit school in the seventh grade so his mother would not have to work. 1944 and 1945 he spent what he described as "the two worst years of my life" in the Navy.  In 1952, he organized for the Community Service Organization, where he urged Mexican Americans to register and vote.  In 1973, the first four-year Mexican-American College was established. It was named Colegio Cesar Chavez in Chavez's honor. Since his death in 1993, many streets, schools, and parks have been named after the most well known Latino American civil rights activist.
